I don't know what it is, but WoW is the only MMO I've ever played that felt meaty. Rift, EQ2, Vanguard, WAR... they all felt lightweight compared to WoW combat. It just feels... oomph.

I've been out of War for far too long to remember it- but I do recall not having issues with the abilities themselves- there was certainly lag episodes though. As far as WoW goes, it is functional and effective but it is also something that most of us here have gotten sooooo used too over the last 7-8 years that even if it did have discernible flaws, we wouldn't consciously note them. I found otoh SWTOR to be a step down or more in comparison to WoW and that is only partly due to lag.

The animations were bad for SWTOR as well. I press one button and the guy does two to five completely different animations.

SWTOR's combat wasn't just plagued by bad animations, it was poor responsiveness that really doomed the combat to mediocrity.

    There's a reason they're offering free 30 days for anyone with a level 50 character. :P

hey guys, i'm not the biggest MMO player, I've only played SWG, and WoW, and I came upon this quote Curt made about the MMO.
...It will NOT be an ability based sand box game, it just won't. So those of you that want that need not continue following this thread. Apologies if that was what you were hoping for.
It won't reinvent the wheel in many ways, but I do believe it will introduce some things promised, yet never done, and some things thought un'doable'. It may not be your cup of tea, but I am betting, roughly 40mm of my own money, and crap ton of others, that we will change the MMO space forever.
It will not be a twitched based combat system, it will have classes, it will have things I think MMO players love, and it will do them as well as anyone ever has....
    What does that mean exactly?

What it means is that similar to WoW's combat, you target someone and your character auto attacks while you select from a hotbar what skills to use. What Curt is saying also is that the combat being developed for the game will do something new, but I don't see it being really anything special because maybe its just me, but I cant see/predict what the next logical step for the evolution of the usual MMO combat.

"An ability based sand box game" would be something like Ultima Online or Mortal Online. (and others)

As an example, you have 800 ability points and 30 abilities. Abilities increase through use. Each ability caps at 100. You can, therefore, have 8 abilities out of 30 at the cap, at any time. (8 * 100 = 800 )

There are typically no classes in these types of games because you pick and choose what you want for abilities, rather than have them assigned as part of your class. There is also typically no "end-game" in these types of games, because the developers (for some insane reason) feel that PvP is an endgame of its own, and players will "make their own content", which generally means leaving the game once they reach the ability cap.

The mechanisms of combat, though, can be entirely different, with either system.

Thinking about it for 10 seconds, I'm not aware of a "sand box" type MMO that does not have horrifically unbalanced FOTM 1v1 PvP.

Curt has often talked about Copernicus being a class based game. I'd love to see a purely ability based game someday, but I don't know how it would ever be a good business decision - it's too complex for most players.

But I, for one, can't wait to see what they come up with that might be different. I'm saving my pennies to buy a new PC once we find out what we'll need to play it and I haven't done that for a game in a long time - not since EQ2 was released. I don't know if it will move the MMO space into a brand new era - but I don't really care. I just want a world that I find interesting to go and play in. If Reckoning is any indication, then they are on the right track.

And of course it's nice to have people to go into a game with, ready to conquer.
