I was thinking about this last night and I imagine that Copernicus will most likely be similar to the art style in Reckoning. I say this because I imagine that they are sharing art packages in order to keep consistency. I could be completely wrong. Maybe we get an overhead point and click a la Runescape ;P

Eq style with new textures and add a few extra features for character customization. Some of the new npc models are the best around its just too bad they never added full range of animations and put them into effect for the pc side.

More than anything I just want proper lighting and art style to set the mood. If I am running through a forest at night I expect it to be dark and feel like a forest at night not some lush highly colored paradise as it would appear during the day. Same for monster and pc models. If I am facing a terribad orc I expect the look to match that intensity and not be some cuddly bear like most games put out.

I believe Curt made mention of how orcs would be the intimidating baddasses they should be and knowing todds involvement I am not too worried there. I just dont want to see the same cheesy tera, gw2, and wow like plush toy monsters and pc models for evil and animalistic races.

I personally do not like WoW's art style especially the overly outlandish gear although I do like stylized art. Realism used to be the most important thing for me, but I can see the advantages with stylized art styles given the current limitations (I don't care for "cartoony" looks but stiff animations on "realistic" models is just as bad so it's all about finding a balance). Reckoning seemed to be a decent blend of the two because the had some outlandish qualities in the gear, but it was to overly done and the colorfulness of the world was nice, but could have used a little bit more work. I am unsure exactly how Copernicus will end up looking like, but it has a lot of promise given the game and physics engines that are being used.

skyrim's art style and color use was so bland that it look worse than real life. Dont know about you but I play fantasy to be in a more fanciful and colorful place than rl. I truly don't understand this movement in gaming where "realism and muted tone are awsome".

That was kind of the point though. Whereas Cyrodil was full of lush green environments showing off the central province of Tamriel in Oblivion, Skyrim was showing you how desolate the north can be.

I can accept that, but an area can still be desolate and still enticing to look at. Fallout is a good example because it was quite literally a wasteland. Yet I didn't mind traveling and looking at the landscape because it just had a great mood and interesting world. Maybe Im alone but I was greatly disappointed by SKyrim, cheifly because the world was just plain old boring to be in. Maybe Im being harsher on it than Oblivion because Im older now, but despite the repetition, Cyrodiil was just way more interesting to run around in.

On the other hand, I personally found Skyrim to be absolutely stunning and beautiful. There were points I'd be running around and I'd just stop and climb up a hill/mountain for a look at the snowy backgrounds.
My preference for an artstyle is easy to guess. EQ. I'll play WoW, but over time the art gets to me. Trying to get my gf to play the only class she found interesting to even think about was a druid. Why? Because then she wouldn't have to look at the ugly armor /racial graphics. Her words.

Sure, WoW can be fun picking up a massive axe, mace, sword or whatever and going to town.
But I find EQ generally more funt o look at. I'd prefer something more realistic, personally.

I'd hate to see what you call beautiful and stunning if Skyrim was bland. Granted Skyrim is not as vivid color wise as Oblivian was, it was not meant to be, it was meant to be darker and more in season with the weather and location and to set a more foreboding mood. Oblivian didnt have such high mountains nor did it have the amount of snow Skyrim has. The two are completely different backdrops and settings for me. The level of detail within each is very noticeably different as well.

My wish for Copernicus is that we can continue to use better/higher graphic settings and performance in a small area with 100+ other active characters and people raiding, emoting or whatever without lag and without being forced to turn down settings during such high load/stress times. The thing to remember is that the developers are going to cut/dumb down/weaken whatever they can to keep lag down, performance up and packet loss at a minimum. With advances in graphics where its at today there will have a be a cut off point with graphic card performance and quality (I would rather see quality given priority). Which cards can and will keep up the performance and will run the game adequately in high graphic stress situations. Which cards can only run the bare minmum. Where is the cut off point? DX9 still ? Gawd I hope not, I dont want to play in WoW graphics, or even EQ1 when it launched in DX8, that would be like playing in a bad stop-motion movie now. The other thing is most people dont consider it that we have much more HD space than 5-7 years ago, there is not any reason not to increase the amount of details and depth or use the space to attempt to make everything more 3Dish instead of 2D. I dont mind giving 25-30 gigs up for a game that maybe be my major entertainment for the next, ohh 10 years, like EQ1 was. Even now EQ2 is using 16.6 gigs now EQ1 uses 8.3g with 18(?) expansions installed.

Quite frankly I'd like better multi-monitor support, made so we have 2 views, a first person and a 3rd person or even forward and behind, or even the ability to shift the base POV to one side of a game or the other, instead of fixed in the middle. I wish I had 2 wide screens, the ones I do have are regular 4:3 ratio, so I play most games in windowed mode when I can and stretch the game halfway into the 2nd monitor, unless I'm boxing EQ1. (Eyefinity is great for this). This setup does allow me to view my browser or whatever without alt-tabbing at all, its very easy at times.

The graphical fidelity of Skyrim on the highest setting was very impressive, but actual ART wise such as enviornments, save for a few well done areas, was really lacking. Everyone is of course entitled to thier own opinions, but I've had more than a few people agree wholeheartledly with me on the matter. But nevermind, its not about Copernicus, which is what this thread is for. I honestly hope that they retain a similar vibe to reckoning, just with much sharper grphics and better preformance.
