It seems far more than coincidence that Dark Ages (McFarlane) Spawn is a knight from the same century as Medieval (Gaiman) Spawn.”
I'm a long time MMO player, started in The Realm (1.0) and it got much worse from there. Lived in EQ on Povar and then Xev for far too many years in several of the top raiding guilds until life caught up to me. Haven't played anything too seriously since then (a little WoW, EQ2, LotRO, etc).
Anxious for Amalur, have read all of RA's stuff throughout the years and am a huge fan of the lore in games, so I'm dying to see what he's come up with. High hopes for both Reckoning and Copernicus.

Hello! My name is Charles ‘kieron’ Dane and I am the new Lead Community Manager at 38 Studios. It’s an honor and privilege to interact with the communities, such as 38 Watch, that surround 38 Studios and our games.

I’ve been a member of the site for a fair amount of time, but really couldn’t participate until after I started with the studio. One of the things that stood out to me is the community shares a number of traits with the Big Huge Games and 38 Studios teams, including a desire to turn their efforts into something larger than the sum of its parts and an overall excitement for all things Amalur.

I don’t want firstborn children and can’t spill details, but I will do everything I can to direct comments to the right people and answer the questions I can.

I’m looking forward to building a long relationship and interacting with the Amalur community.

Hello Watchers,

I'm excited to announce our very first contest/giveaway, here at 38 Watch! The wonderful folks at 38 Studios have gifted us with a handful of limited-edition, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning posters, as a sign of their appreciation of our long-time support of their burgeoning projects. These are the same, full-sized, limited-edition posters that were given to the attendees of the 38 Studios panel, at Comic-Con 2010 - certainly a proper way to kick off any Amalur collection that you may be planning!

So how are we going to do this? I'm glad you asked.

Because of the limited amount of posters, and the arbitrary nature of online contests, we are going to try to make things as simple and fair as possible:

Starting tomorrow, and continuing through Labor Day, we will be giving away one poster each day, at which point we will be out of posters.

Each day, I will post an official giveaway announcement, via this thread. This announcement will be accompanied by a trivia question, which must be answered correctly, via this thread, in order to claim your prize.

The prize will go to the first member to post the correct answer, as determined by our wholly objective judging staff (namely, me ). All judges decisions are final.

All winners are responsible for sending me a mailing address, in order to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will be forced to sharpie your forum name on the side, and toss it in the nearest mailbox.

The daily giveaway will happen at a random time, so check back often.

Get a leg up on the competition: advance warning of the daily giveaways will be posted, via the 38 Watch Twitter and Facebook fan page.

You can only win once.

Placeholder posts will not increase your chances of winning, as we will be monitoring the responses in real time. (Also edited posts are timestamped with the last modified time.)

Unsporting behavior will disqualify you from this contest. Please be nice.

If you don't win, don't fret. We will certainly have more contests and giveaways in the future.

So the best of luck to you, and have fun! You folks definitely deserve a reward for your continued contribution to our awesome little community. You should be excited and encouraged by the fact that the crew at 38 Studios is definitely noticing what's going on here. Keep up the good work, give yourselves a pat on the back, and stick around for what is sure to be an epic journey!

Cheers!

Concerning Copernicus, if you could make one suggestion to the development team, what would it be? I've been extremely impressed by most of the people on this forum, and I'd would love to hear what everyone would say to this. Of course though, I did not start this thread JUST to hear yours, I have my own as well! So here it is.

Mitigate the trivialization of old content.

Let's use a very simple, hypothetical situation. In the Vanilla game of Copernicus, the best weapons in the game do about 50 damage. When an expansion is released, the newer, harder bosses now drop 60 damage weapons. This is normal in MMO's and is to be expected. However leaving that as is trivializes old content unless you force the player to go through the old content first. Well forcing something like that I don't think is a good thing. So here's just one very good way to solve this issue. Not only would a new expansion boss drop a 60 damage weapon, but they would ALSO drop either a quest piece or some sort of augment that could be used to upgrade your 50 damage vanilla game weapon to 65 damage. Thus the player that has taken the time to go through the vanilla content AND the expansion content will have the best gear attainable. I believe this would also keep old world zones populated, and lively.

This is only one idea.. I'm sure there are more good ones, but personally I haven't seen any developers of any MMO I can think of put effort into this issue. Although I think Vanguard touched on this idea a bit.

Awhile back when we got the very first trailer for KoA: Reckoning we also got a glimpse at some very wicked models done by Todd. However I don't think we ever brought them up. So now I have. First we have Aiyn Shir. Is it a race? A character? Unfortunately the small blurb in the yellow box never came into focus to capture the text. All we have for now is this nice image of an incredibly awesome sculpture.

Next up we have the sculpture of the Mountain Troll. You may remember him from a few of the screenshots released so far. All in all the sculpture makes it look ready to raze a village and crush some crazy adventurers.

And finally with a bit of conjecture I finally decided to call this one Murghan 2.0. Although at the moment there is no actual name known to us for this creature. The Murghan for those who don't know seem to be a bipedal race of creatures that would probably be in fine company with the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This guy however seems to be one of those guys pumped up to another level. The screenshots of the trailer and from the official site help to give a better idea of this guy.
These were my findings in the panel, but until this moment I had just plain forgot to post them. Overall this signals some very cool things in our future. But what do you guys think?

But as much fun as the comic is, you might want to check out the related forum posts and commentary on the GU Comics site here.

I have visited GU Comics regularly since my EQ playing days and I always appreciate Woody's efforts and commentary. This particular comic really brought back memories for a lot of people and it is interesting to read their comments and thoughts. Including a pretty good explanation of the lore surrounding the Sleeper.

I'm not sure if the game play style still exists to handle some of the challenges that original EQ presented. I sometimes find it challenging to find enough people interested to try some of the minor raids in LOTRO.

Is that level of commitment even possible anymore? Do we WANT to play a game like that?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Anyone else play either of these games? Any of you who enjoy strategy games like Civilization should give them a go. They are pretty deep, gameplay wise. Lots to do. Lots of room for replaying it over and over since things can work out in very very strange ways.

For instance here is my Castile Grand Campaign (1399 to 1820). I'm at the year 1443 right now. Anyway, to give you an idea of what I have done in 44 years, here is the start of the campaign:

So anyway, Castille starts off under the rule of Enrique III. To the west is Portugal, to the East are Navarra (the small one-province nation in brighter yellow), and Aragon. To the south is the Muslim-run nation of Granada. Well, we're a Catholic nation so obviously we can't have other religions on our peninsula.

Enrique's first war involves Castille and England (our allies) against Granada, Morocco and Algiers. We concentrated on Granada first and a quick conquest and we annexed them. Then we sent some missionaries to do conversions. After that we hit N. Africa. Our initial war only got us a province in both Morocco and Algiers. Portugal grabbed Tangiers after the Pope called for a Crusade against Morocco.

Right after this war, England went to war with France. Aragon was allied with France, so we invaded them. Despite their conquest of Navarra, we managed to conquer Aragon and in the peace dealings we relieved them of several key provinces.

Few years passed. Then we went to war with Morocco again. This time we freed up a number of provinces including Sus which had gold in it.

After that, things got crazy. While a number of our forces were in N. Africa, Aragon decided to try to win back some of it's lost territory. Portugal, Sicily and Burgandy came to bat for Aragon while England left us hanging. Those bastards.

The war started off rough. While we made short work of the Portugese in Tangiers (and removed their presence in N. Africa), they were pushing into our continental territory. Two armies were sent to Portugal while another two were sent to Aragon. One army hung back in N. Africa to quell any uprisings. Our sixth army was sent to Southern Castille to liberate a few provinces the Portugese took.

It took a good bit of time and some hard fighting, but we first made Sicily capitulate after our navy crushed their fleet and army which was trying to land troops in N. Africa.

Aragon bowed out after that, giving up three additional provinces to Castille. We then crushed the 35,000 troops Burgandy put into the Iberian peninsula and went to work on Portugal. We made Portugal hand us Tangiers and then things were peaceful again.

So that was all under Enrique III (rule: 9 OCT 1390 - 15 FEB 1435). Juana I, his daughter, was named Queen. She then reformed Castille into an Imperial Administration and took the title of Empress. Portugal decided to challenge this. They and Aragon declared war on us. This war ended rather quickly. The remains of Aragon were absorbed into the Empire. We made Portugal hand us a good bit of money. Within weeks, Morocco, Algiers and Tripoli declared war on us. A combined force of some 80,000 Castillan and English troops made short work of these nations. Algiers and Tripoli got off by paying some funds. Morocco was made a vassal of the Empire.

so here's how the world looks in 1443:

Oh, I should manage that one province on the very far south of my N. African holdings is my first colony, Rio de Oro. I colonized it after conquering territory in Morocco.

Annnd an overall world map of Castille's possessions:

(I am in bright yellow, my vassals... well, Morocco in this case, is in darker yellow).

Next goals:

1) Form Spain in 1460 after Valencia becomes a Core Province.
2) Help the French rebuild. France was crushed by a combined war against Austria, Burgandy and England. They got put down to one province. England and Burgandy are becoming threats that I don't care to see on the continent. I'll have to hit Burgandy first. I can tear them up into several little nations. I may ally up with Austria to do that too. I don't mind the Germanic nations, they're busy fighting the Orthodox nations of the East and the Ottomans (who managed to take out the Byzantines fairly early).
3) Push my holdings into North Africa further.
4) Conquer the Azores and Madeira. I don't like the Portugese pushing for N. America. In fact, I think I'm going to conquer them and make them my vassals. I demand tribute!
